The GM is having a gala time as the company is busy preparing the 2018 Buick Regal. The model has undergone some changes and for 2018 it will be launched both in sedan and wagon forms. Furthermore, the sedan will be called Sportback while the wagon is named TourX. These models are aimed at reviving the old penchant for wagons and minivans.

Both the Sportback and TourX variants of 2018 Buick Regal have an enticing design. The Sportback blends the look of the midsize sedan with sleek, coupe-like. It offers 31.5 cubic feet cargo space. It is 200 pounds more lightweight than the outgoing sedan. The 2018 Regal TourX, is aimed at rivals like Volvo V60 Cross Country and Subaru Outback. The manufacturer says it combines the versatility of an SUV and driving dynamics of the car.

The TourX is bigger than the Sportback and looks more rugged, as it is. It also has more cargo space. The Regal Sportback gets four trim levels- Essence, Preferred, Preferred II and Regal. However, the TourX get 3 trim levels- TourX, Essence and Preferred. Both the models are likely to be launched in a range of regular and metallic exterior colors.

The 2018 Buick Regal Sportback is based on Chevrolet Malibu and Buick LaCrosse. The Regal TourX with its plastic black wheel arch extensions resembles Volvo V60 Cross Country. You can expect dual zone climate control, several in cabin storage along with ambient lighting as optional or standard features.

Availability and Cost

The exact release date of 2018 Buick Regal TourX and Sportback are not clear. But the company sources say both models will reach showrooms by end of 2017. Nothing is known about the pricing as of now. However, the GM is not likely to be too aggressive about the pricing of the new models.

Summing it up

There is no doubt GM is taking the calculated risk by unveiling the two new models- namely 2018 Buick Regal TourX and Sportback. In an era where SUV and crossovers rule the road, launching models that belong to a different category altogether seem rather risky. However, the platforms on which these two models are based are solid ones.

The cars have nice styling and the powertrain used in them is also decent. However, some target buyers may rue about the absence of any diesel or hybrid setup. The GM has not revealed the pricing yet.

The models, however, have the benefit of getting laden with unique safety measures and a good set of optional amenities.
