The 2018 Chevy Impala may not woo you with style but it is not dull in terms of exterior design. The sedan segment is not exactly hot favorite right now, with the majority of car buyers eyeing for crossover SUV segment.
Still, the GM is in no mood to withdraw its mid and large sized family sedans from the market. That explains why the US car giant is giving the Chevy Impala makeover for 2018.
2018 Chevy Impala – Design Update and the new Colors
It is a bit conservatively styled. The model will be sold in 3 trims- LS, LT and Premier. Three new exterior colors are available- Cajun Red Tintcoat, Nightfall Gray Metallic and Graphite Metallic. The 19-inch wheels are no longer available, so you get 18 inch and 20-inch wheel choices. DRL is standard on all trims.
The cabin of 2018 Chevy Impala is roomy- beyond question. The cargo capacity is 18.8 cubic feet. Dashboard and cabin layout is streamlined. Acoustic windshield helps reduce road and engine noise to an extent. All trims get a 12-volt power outlet. The car gets a new version of GM’s MyLink infotainment setup with 8-inch display. The cabin has enough room for all passengers.
The 2018 Chevy Impala gets plenty of safety features and amenities, though the Premier trim gets all the bells and whistles. You get enough customization choices in terms of packages. Some of these features included in the various packages can also be bought as standalone options for LS and LT trim.
LS trim gets Premium Cloth/Leatherette upholstery, 8.0” infotainment system, automatic headlights, MyLink Radio, 18-inch steel wheels, cruise control.
LT Trim gets dual-zone automatic climate control, LED daytime running lights, heated mirrors, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather-wrapped steering wheel, additional USB ports and remote vehicle start. This trim can be laden with Sunroof and Spoiler package. LT convenience package is there which gets heated front seats and heated steering wheel.
Top notch Premier trim gets satellite navigation, wireless charging for compatible phones, Universal Home Remote, 120-volt power outlet, xenon headlights and a Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound setup. You also get a 4G LTE Wi-Fi setup inbuilt. You may download the myChevrolet Mobile App in your Smartphone and control some features of the car remotely.
The MyLink touch screen infotainment works like a charm as it does on SUV and pickup trucks models from stables of GM. The display is crystal clear and touch-screen response and ease of navigation. There are a couple of Appearance packages. The LT trim can be laden with Midnight Edition package.
The 2018 Chevy Impala also gets a decent amount of safety features. The trims get a set of airbags, antilock brakes, stability and traction control. Available safety features comprise of Rear Cross Traffic Alert, Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Departure Warning, and Forward Collision Alert. The 2018 Chevy Impala gets good marks in federal safety tests. OnStar, GM’s subscription-based service is standard in the 2018 Impala. It includes emergency assistance button, automatic crash notification, stolen vehicle assistance and remote door unlock.
2018 Chevy Impala – Engine and Acceleration
The base trim of 2018 Chevy Impala gets a 2.5 L 4 cylinder engine and this engine has an automatic stop-start system. It produces around 197 horsepower. The top trim gets a more powerful 3.6 L V6 engine that makes 305 HP. Both engines are mated with a 6-speed automatic transmission unit. Ride quality is good though it is not exactly a sporty sedan.
The V6 engine can reach zero to 60 mph in approx 6.4 seconds- which is not bad for this segment. The suspension is pretty good and it does a great job of soaking in bumpers and potholes. Body roll is not annoying and brake performance is also pretty good.
2018 Chevy Impala – Availability and How Much will Cost
The 2018 Chevy Impala price is not yet announced. However, it is likely that GM will not price it too steeply. So, the base trim price can be close to $29.000 and the top trim price could be around $37.000. However, when added to packages, its price can cross the $40.000 mark. It will be unveiled in late 2017.
Summing it up
The 2018 Chevy Impala is a nice midsized sedan which is aimed more at small to medium families with urban driving needs and it can also be taken on highways from time to time. The design is a bit on the conservative side but the classy interior more than makes up for it. All the trims get enough amenities though Premier trim packs with maximum features.
You also get a lot of packages for enhancing looks or adding to safety quotient. As for the powertrain, the V6 engine is a good performer though fuel efficiency seekers will opt for the other engine. Overall, the Impala offers good value for money. But, upon release, it is going to face steep competition from rivals like Toyota Avalon and newcomers like Kia Cadenza.
