The company has decided to give the 2019 Nissan Frontier a makeover. The upcoming Frontier will be manufactured at the company’s Mississippi plant along with bigger sibling Titan.
The last time the Frontier received a proper makeover was way back in 2005 and it is continuing with the old design and abysmal safety provisions year after year.
Midsized pickup truck buyers get spoilt for choice these days, given the abundance of choices. However, there are some old-time players that have withstood the test of time but face uncertain future. One such example is the Nissan Frontier. While the rivals like Toyota Tacoma and Chevy Colorado have been revamped several times and they attract more buyers, the Frontier has been left largely neglected by the Japanese car giant.
2019 Nissan Frontier – Body and Design Changes
The 2019 Nissan Frontier comes with minimal changes, it looks bland when placed beside rivals like GMC Canyon and Honda Ridgeline. The 2019 model is likely to retain existing exterior hues like Magnetic Black, Lava Red, Gun Metallic, Arctic Blue Metallic, Brilliant Silver and some more colors may be also offered.
The trim level will be same as the existing model. So you can expect trims- S, SV, SL, Desert Runner, and Pro-4X. The new Midnight edition introduced for 2018 model year will most likely be retained for 2019. The truck will be offered in crew cab and king cab setups.
The Special Midnight Edition trim stands out with the stylish blackened exterior. It gets black side mirror covers, black step rails, black 18-inch alloy wheels, glossy black grille, black badges and body-colored bumpers. The model will be sold in three hues- Magnetic Black, Glacier White and Gun Metallic. However, it comes only in Crew Cab setup and that may be retained for 2019 model too.
The cabin of upcoming 2019 Nissan Frontier will also be modified to offer more satisfaction and utility to the customers- beyond doubt. There will be several upholstery choices and top trim will get leather upholstery for sure. The expected upholstery choices are Graphite Steel Cloth, Beige Leather, Steel Leather, Graphite Leather etc. You may also get additional compartments and bins to store beverages and gadgets. Cargo capacity will also get a boost.
Safety and Trims
To ensure the 2019 Frontier finds some traction in midsized pickup segment, Nissan should equip it with advanced safety features and enough amenities. Most rivals leave the existing Frontier way behind in both departments- as it is.
The 2018 model has got some features like Bluetooth, rearview camera and cruise control and the 2019 model is likely to add some more features. S trim will get features like steel wheels, chrome front grille, rear privacy glass, Rear View Monitor, 12-volt power outlets.
The SV trim will get aluminum-alloy wheels, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, remote keyless entry etc. The Desert Runner trim is meant for users into off-road adventures and so it gets enhanced feature set. It adds larger aluminum-alloy wheels, all-terrain tires, fog lights, Satin chrome grille, Active Brake Limited Slip etc.
Top end Pro-4X trim will get features like spray-on bed liner, underbody Skid plates, Splash Guards, Nissan Navigation System, NissanConnect Mobile Apps, Automatic Temperature Control, Auto-dimming rearview mirror, heated front seats, Leather-wrapped steering wheel, Rear Sonar System.
The 2019 Nissan Frontier will also come with several customization options including trim specific packages. The default expected safety features are Advanced Air Bag System, Traction Control System, TPMS, and Vehicle Immobilizer System. However, Toyota has revamped its entire truck range with advanced feature features and it is high time Nissan does the same for the upcoming version of Frontier.
It would be good to see the truck coming laden with features like low speed automated emergency braking, lane keeps assist and forward collision alert. It will also be better if the 2019 model gets equipped with an enhanced version of Nissan Connect infotainment and larger touch display. Both GM and Ford have updated infotainment setup in their models and Nissan should follow suit.
2019 Nissan Frontier – Under the Hood
There are some rumors doing the rounds on the powertrain to be used in final model 2019 Nissan Frontier. While it is possible Nissan will retain existing powertrain options with the tweaked output it may also happen that new engines are introduced in the lineup. The engines used in the Navara pickup may be used in the upcoming Frontier as well.
So, you can expect the next 2019 Nissan Frontier to be laden with the QR25DE 2.5-liter I-4 engine. The other trims may get a more powerful 4.0-liter V6 engine. A new Cummins turbo diesel engine is also expected. All engines will be mated with enhanced automated transmission gearbox.
2019 Nissan Frontier – Towing Capacity
The towing capacity of the 2019 Nissan Frontier will also get a boost for all trims. So, the maximum towing capacity may cross 7000 pounds.
2019 Nissan Frontier – Debut and Cost
The release date of 2019 Nissan Frontier is yet to be announced. However, it may be unveiled for sale in late 2018. The 2018 model saw a slight price bump for each trim and the same can be true for 2019 models- given a through spruce up is on the cards. Still, the base trim price should be around $20.000.
Summing it up
Nissan has finally decided to accomplish along due task- updating the aging Frontier truck! The current model looks seriously outdated besides popular segment rivals. The details are still not clear but it will be more than cosmetic touch up- as per industry updates. A styling update is long due and cabin will also get revamped to an extent- as per the industry sources.
If the powertrain is tweaked with focus on fuel economy and acceleration, the 2019 Nissan Frontier may woo away buyers from segment rivals. Of course, Nissan also needs to keep the pricing competitive to make the new Frontier hit the bull’s eye.
