There are many popular cars manufactured by Japanese car maker Toyota Motors and it keeps introducing new models from time to time. However, the company is planning to relaunch a popular sports car of yesteryears- as per the updates. The iconic Toyota Supra is being readied for a re-launch and the car will be a result of collaboration between German luxury carmaker BMW and Toyota. The original car was a derivative of Toyota Celica and in 1986 it emerged as a separate model. The last Supra was manufactured way back in 2002 and it enjoyed a successful run in the late 1990s. The company sources say, the 2019 Toyota Supra will be manufactured at the Austria facility of Magna Steyr and initially, the car will be made in 60.000 units per year. It is where the iconic Mercedes-Benz G-Wagen is also manufactured.
The root of the making of the new Supra goes back to 2012 when Toyota announced its plan to launch a sports car in alliance with BMW. The unveiling of BMW Z4 concept made the buzz stronger. In 2014, Toyota showcased the much-touted FT-1 concept at Detroit Auto Show and this made fans more excited about the development of new Supra. The company did not show the prototype at the Tokyo Motor Show and it will not be there in 2018 Detroit Motor show either. However, that has not dampened the enthusiasm of the fans who are eagerly awaiting its arrival.
The latest buzz is that Toyota may not actually use the Supra name for the new model. The model may be sold as Gazoo or Toyota may also sell it under Celica name. The original Supra was also a successor to Celica model.
2019 Toyota Supra – Design Features
The test prototype of upcoming 2019 Toyota Supra has been spied testing several times in Nurburgring several times but the heavy layer of camouflage has thwarted efforts to understand the detail of the design. A lot of speculations are doing the rounds and it is hard to say which one will be actually reliable.
However, the images still reveal some design traits and it is clear the new Supra will have aggressive and sleek exterior styling. The headlamps are LED powered and there are upper and lower units. The 2019 Toyota Supra will also get LED DRL. It is difficult to figure out the rear styling of the new Supra owing to heavy padding. The rear tail lamps are also Led powered and they are thin. These lamps may be used in the final model too. It is expected to be equipped with a hardtop and the roof will have a sloping shape like the coupe. It is not known if Toyota will offer in a few trims or not.
The interior of upcoming 2019 Toyota Supra is expected to be stylish. The round steering wheel is likely to be there. The dashboard layout is expected to be simple and a big infotainment display is expected. The cabin may also get quality upholstery and metal trim. Rest is unknown but Toyota says the cabin will not be as sporty as the FT-1. To take on rivals like Acura NSX, Toyota may focus on using lavish materials in the cabin. The sloping roofline may cut down on headroom to an extent and it may not have much cargo storage space as well.
Safety and Amenities of the 2019 Toyota Supra
The 2019 Toyota Supra is not exactly family car or luxury crossover. Still, it is going to be laden with some active safety features Toyota uses in its current lineup of cars. Of course, it will get decent amenities. So, you can expect plenty of airbags and stability control and a blind spot monitor. Some optional advances safety features may be on offer.
You can get some customizations for upholstery and entertainment. Toyota may use a specially designed touchscreen infotainment setup in the car. There may be a premium audio setup on offer as well.
2019 Toyota Supra – Under the Hood
Just like the styling, the powertrain to be deployed in the 2019 Toyota Supra is shrouded in mystery. Several theories are doing rounds online on the matter. Toyota is definitely going to use a beefy powertrain in the car.
The V6 hybrid setup may be used in the vehicle. The output of this setup can be around 400 HP. However, the possibility of Toyota using a hybrid gasoline based engine cannot be ruled out either. As is the case with sporty cars, fuel economy will not be much high.
There is a possibility of the engine coming from the stable of BMW, given the two companies have joined hands. So, the powertrain to be used in the new BMW Z5 or a derivative may be taken for the Supra eventually. This can be a turbocharged 2.0-liter unit. The output is however unclear. The possibility of a twin-turbo, 3.0-liter engine taken from BMW is there too. This engine if used will have an output above 300 HP. Whatever engine is used in the car eventually, it will get an RWD setup- as per Toyota sources.
2019 Toyota Supra – Cost and Launch Date
Expect pricing of the 2019 Toyota Supra is unknown and Toyota is tight-lipped on the issue. However, the expected base price is approx $40.000. If the company launches more than one trim eventually, performance-oriented versions may carry a price tag of $50.000 approx. The launch time is unclear but it can be in late 2018 or so.
As a matter of fact, the 2019 Toyota Supra will not have many rivals to cope with- if it is released in 2019 or earlier. This can be both an advantage and drawback for Toyota. It will appeal to a niche segment of buyers- at least initially. The pricing will play a role in its success as well.
The 2019 Toyota Supra will have edgy and macho exterior styling which is evident from the spy shots. Details of the cabin and power-train are not confirmed but the engine will be a beefy one- beyond question. With the right feature and performance- the upcoming Toyota Supra may live up to the expectation of fans.
